🐕 Dog Training Tip - Recall

Does your dog ignore you when you call them? Try making coming to you the best thing ever! Use high-value treats, a happy voice, and a game of chase in the opposite direction (you run away from them). The more fun and rewarding you make recall training, the more likely your dog will always come running! Always reward them for coming and never get upset with them when they do come, even if you had to wait for a minute. Don't call them for anything unpleasant, as you don't want to create negative associations with that word "come". Get our recall tip sheet here.

Captivating Dog Studies

Dogs' Memory for Object Names - A study published in Biology Letters demonstrated that some dogs can remember the names of their toys even after a two-year absence. Five dogs were taught the names of 12 toys over a week long period. After a two-year period without access to these toys, they could still correctly identify them 44% of the time, indicating remarkable long-term memory capabilities in certain dogs.

Amazing Dog Facts

Dogs Can Smell Stress and Disease – Dogs detect changes in human body chemistry related to emotions, cancer, and even low blood sugar.

The Oldest Dog Breed is Over 4,000 Years Old – The Saluki, originally from Egypt, is one of the oldest known domesticated breeds.

🐾 Puppy Training Corner

Is your puppy biting and needs some guidance? Try this: when those sharp teeth land on you, calmly redirect them to a suitable chew, bone, tug rope, or stuffed toy. Then, reward them when they engage with you through play and praise. This teaches your pup what to bite, instead of just what not to bite! Get our free Puppy Biting Decision Tree here.

🔥 Understanding Dog Reactivity

Reactivity in dogs occurs when they overreact to certain stimuli, such as other dogs, people, or loud noises. This is often driven by fear, frustration, or excitement. If your dog goes over threshold and becomes reactive, here are a few quick strategies to help you regain some calm:

  • Create distance: Move away from the trigger as calmly as possible.
  • Use pattern games: Simple exercises like "find it" (tossing treats on the ground) can help redirect focus.
  • Stay calm: Your dog senses your energy, so take deep breaths and avoid adding tension to the situation.
  • Have an exit strategy: If you know certain areas or triggers are tough for your dog, plan ahead for a smooth escape when needed.
